While registering for IELTS, you need to be clear about a lot of things. IELTS can be given with IDP or British Council. You can register it with any IDP or British Council. Before you register be clear about the dates of the exam and location that are available according to your preference. IDP or British Council can be decided on the basis of test dates and the location of the test centre.

Steps to follow:

Registration for IELTS is very simple and quick. It can be done both online and by post.

  • Read the details carefully: The candidates should read the details of the test carefully. The format of the test, question types and the test results. Before applying one should take a practice test to analyze themselves and see how much more time they need to prepare for the test. Once this is done you can decide on the date of the exam or by when you will be fully prepared to appear for the test.
  • Decide the Version: There are two versions of IELTS:

Academic: It is for the people who are seeking admissions in universities and other institutions for higher education or seeking professional registration such as nurse or doctors.

General: It is for the people who intend to undertake non-academic training or work experience or immigration purposes.

It is advisable that before applying for any version of IELTS you check with organization you plan to work with or study in.

  • Check the exam dates: if you choose to go with IDP then log on to www.ieltsidpindia.com and then go to register for IELTS and select your date and city. If you choose to go for British Council then log on to www.britishcouncil.in and click on apply and check for available dates and your city. It is recommended that you register one month prior to make sure you get a place.

The listening, reading and writing test will on the same day and the speaking test can be either on the same day or within a week before or after the test date.  

  • Registration: You can register easily online or by post. After you have selected the date and city for the test, fill up the registration form carefully. You can also download the form and courier it to IDP head office. Keep your passport handy as it is used as identity document. You need to put your passport number at the time of registration. You also need to carry your passport on the day of the exam, it is the only identity proof acceptable.
  • Payment: One can pay by credit card or by cash or demand draft.

Payment by demand draft:

IDP: Demand draft must be drawn in favour of "IDP EDUCATION INDIA PRIVATE LIMITED, Payable at New Delhi.

Cash: Attach the original customer copy of the ICICI deposit slip depositing cash in nearest ICICI bank branch.

British Council: Demand draft drawn in favour of 'British Council' payable at Delhi along with a copy of the online registration confirmation / completed application form. 

Cash: Attach the original customer copy of the ICICI deposit slip depositing cash in nearest ICICI bank branch.

Yes, it's also important to consider taking mock tests regularly as it prepares to get a practice for final IELTS test. Each part of test - listening, reading, writing and speaking - need a lot of preparation to clear IELTS in one go.
