MS Paint to get a new home: Microsoft
After a massive support that poured in for MS Paint after it was reported that Microsoft was 'killing' the 32 year old app, the company has clarified that Paint will have a new home in the Windows Store, where it will be available for free. The newer Paint will get feature updates.
Tom of Finland director lands Tolkien biopic
Finnish filmmaker Dome Karukoski is all set to direct a Hollywood biopic about J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of the The Lords of the Rings trilogy. Mr. Karukoski is Finland's most critically acclaimed directors.
Scientist, educationist Dr. Yash Pal dead
Scientist, communicator and institution builder, Dr. Yash Pal, died in Noida on Monday evening at the age of 90. In the 1970s, he was the director of Space Applications Centre, a wing of ISRO and set up to conceptualise applications for satellite technology for social needs. He began his career at TIFR as a professor and went on to hold several senior level positions in Indian government. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1976 and Padma Vibhushan in 2013. In the year 1993 he led the MHRD on the issue of overburdening school children. His report was entitled Learning without burden, and it remains an influential document on Indian education. He was also a well known communicator, as he brought galaxies and cosmic rays to living rooms across India via Turning Point, a science show on Doordarshan.
Reliance Defence launches first two Navy Ships named Shachi and Shruti
Subsidiary of Reliance Infrastructure, Reliance Defence and Engineering Limited (RDEL) on Tuesday announced the launch of its first two Naval Offshore Patrol Vessels (NOPVs) at their shipyard in Pipavav, Gujarat. The two NOPVs are named Shachi and Shruti, are among the 5 ships being constructed by RDEL under the P-21 project of the India Navy. The primary utilisation of NOPVs is to undertaje surveillance of India's vast Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), in addition to anit-piracy patrols, maritime security of offshore assets, fleet support operations, coastal security operations and protection of shipping lanes. The five NOPVs are patrol ships armed with a 76 mm Super Rapid Gun Mount (SRGM) system along with two 30 mm AK-630 guns providing medium range and short range offensive and defensive capabilities.
Aarambh-an app for road maintenance launched
A mobile app named Aarambh was launched by Naendra Singh Tomar, Union Minister of Panchayati Raj, Rural Development, Drinking water and Sanitation and Deborah Greenfield, Deputy Director General (Policy) of International Labour Organisation (ILO). Aarambh is a mobile app for performance based maintenance contracting and community based contratinng for maintenance of rural roads.
SHe-Box - a portal for sexual harassment complaints launched by Union government
The Union Ministry of Women and Child Development has launched an online platform 'SHe-Box' (Sexual Harassment Electronic Box) in order to enable women employees of the central government to file complaints related to sexual harassment at the workplace. This step was announced in October 2016 after the ministry received multiple complaints from women employeed in various ministries.
World's first floating wind farm emerges in Scotland
The Peterhead wind farm, known as Hywind is world's first full-scale floating wind farm, around 15 miles off the coast of N-E Scotland. It is a trial project which will power 20,000 homes. The wind farm will be able to harvest the wind power in waters too deep for the current conventional bottom-standing turbiness. Statoil, the manufacturer of the world's first full-scale floating wind farm claims that the output of the turbines will equal or exceed the current ones.
USA commissions world's largest aircraft carrier-USS Gerald R Ford
President of the United States of America, Donald Trump commissioned the most powerful warship USS Gerald R Ford into the fleet of United Stated navy. The warship costs US$ 13 billion and weighs 100000 tonnes and can sail for 20 years without refeulling. The aircraft carrier is powered by nuclear energy.
